Description
Representative Job Duties
Maintenance of park and playground areas which includes picking up glass, paper, rocks, branches, etc., spraying weeds and poison ivy/oak; raking leaves, emptying rubbish containers, cleaning public restrooms, trimming trees and shrubs.
Operation of any motor equipment needed in the performance of duties; repair and cleaning of equipment as needed in the performance of duties.
Seeding and fertilizing grass areas, assist with planting and watering trees, shrubs and flowers;
Hauling, spreading, leveling dirt or clay in repairing holes in parks or ballfields and dragging and lining ballfields; repair park and playground equipment.
Assisting other departments/divisions with special events; install holiday decorations.
Removal of snow and ice on sidewalks and roads around municipal buildings.
Operation of City owned motor vehicles; All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Job Requirements - As Determined By the City Of Southfield
Must be high school graduate or equivalent; related college courses in golf, parks, forestry, and/or landscape a plus.
Certified Playlot Safety Inspector preferred.
Two (2) years full time related work experience in golf, parks, forestry, and/or landscape or related field.
Physical condition sufficient to permit outdoor manual labor under all weather conditions, including working from extension ladders, step ladders and scaffolding.
Must meet the City's standards of a good driving record and possess a Michigan Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be able to obtain same within 6 months following appointment.
Must have Certified Pesticide Applicator's license or be able to obtain within six (6) months of appointment.
Must possess knowledge of the planting and care of grass, trees, shrubs, etc.
Reasonable knowledge of construction, site preparation, rough and finish grading, working with contours and soil preparation for both seeding and sodding conditions.
Reasonable knowledge of the care and maintenance of irrigation systems.
General knowledge of building trades and methods, i.e. plumbing, carpentry, cement work, etc.
Supplemental Information
The selection process will include a review of the applicant's experience for posted requirements, driving record and criminal history check and an oral board interview. Each step of the process must be passed before the applicant will be moved to the next step. Applicants will be invited to further participate in the selection process based on the nature and extent of their related experience, training, and/or certification.
